SULU PNP: HOPE & PRIDE OF THE TAUSUG (Sept.19, 2008)

Sulu Vice Gov Nur-Anna 'Lady Ann' Sahidulla expressed her HOPE AND PRIDE before the graduates in a ceremony of thirty eight (38) Police Officers who took the Basic Police Operation Course of the US Department of Justice's International Criminal Investigation Training Assessment Program.

According to Vice Gov Sahidulla it never ceases to impress upon her the pride and hope on every occassion that she attended. Pride, she said in a sense that the local police force, with the assisstance and support of our friends the Americans, are steadily moving towards professionalism in the performance of their duties and responsibilities. and Hope, that with a professional and capable force, the people's trust will again be regained, and the confidence of the justice system will be restore.

In Sulu, it is undeniable that a large cause of what we call crimes of murder or crimes borne of family feud are result of people with grievances, whether it is valid or not, most of them take the law into their own hands and administering justice in their own ways.

"There are also misperceptions that the Tausogs being gun-loving people to point that they say our men take better care of their guns than their wives," she said.

However, Vice Governor Sahidulla emphasized that in a way, that is a by-product of the erosion of their trust on the police or security forces to defend their rights or correct the wrong done on them. For them the only reasonable option left, she said, is the option of literral self defense, of their family, of their land, their wealth and so forth.

She admitted though that the Tausogs have a long way to correct the people psyche of that notion, our police and the justice system.

But she mentioned that every journey starts with the first step, and she truly hope that the few steps that was taken will lead to change, either on perceptions or real situations.

Present during the graduation ceremonies were; Paul Middlemore- Senior Instructor (International Criminal Investigation Tarining Assessment Program); Richard Miller Senior Law Enforcement Adviser of the US Embassy; Maj Gen Juancho Sabban CO Task Force Comet; Hji Edsir Tan Jolo Vice Mayor; Senior Inspector Amil Baanan Sulu PNP Operations Officer; Police Inspector Modesto Calde Jr. Lanao Police Provincial Office and Police Inspector Rodrigo Granadillos Police Regional Office 5 (Bicol).
