As the skirmishes continue between the MNLF and the Armed Forces of the Philippines due to the September 20, 2009 Eidil Fitri military offensive, more than 517 families were forced to leave their homes and livelihood in Barangay Kagay, Indanan for fear of being killed in the crossfire.

Honorable Vice-Governor Lady Ann Sahidulla upon knowing the plight of her constituents immediately directed the Philippine National Red Cross based in Sulu to conduct Humanitarian and Relief Operation in the said barangay. Sahidulla is the Sulu Provincial Chairman of PNRC.

The affected families evacuated to Barangay Talatak, Indanan Sulu to take refuge. The fighting between the MNLF and the AFP was so fierce to the extent that the bridge connecting between Barangay Talatak and Barangay Buwansa was bombed leaving it un-passable to vehicles.

Due to the bad condition of the bridge, the relief convoy of Sahidulla and PNRC was strained to stop at Barangay Nunuk in Indanan making the evacuees walk from Barangay Talatak to get food aid.

Honorable Sahidulla was disheartened upon seeing the situation of her constituents. She expressed her deep sympathy to the evacuees and serious concern of this seamlessly decades of unending conflict. Few months ago, Barangay Kagay benefited livelihood programs, school buildings, new library full of books, computers and water supply projects from the 3Ps foundation, and the Philippine Marines through Sahidulla’s humble initiatives.

The residents of Barangay Kagay and their Barangay Captain Mr. Nur Gani express their gratitude to the Honorable Vice-Governor for the concern given to them. Barangay Captain Gani said, “We are very thankful to you ma’am for the kind heart you gave us, It was through your initiatives of bringing good programs to our barangay, but the buildings and our livelihood was instantly destroyed by bombs and mortars.”

Vice Governor Sahidulla said “I will continue to provide assistance to our people and most especially the victims of war in Sulu even if armed conflicts in this province have waned down.  As a vanguard for people’s right, we must guarantee support to children and refuge their rights”.

Many of the displaced children in Barangay Kagay and other areas in the Municipality of Indanan were forced to stop schooling because of the war conflict and bloody encounters in the area. Evacuees want to go back to their homes but apparently they are reluctant to return for fear of being killed in the crossfire.
